I am the architect of the project. My name is Mustafa Kansay. I was born in 1979 in Nicosia.
I graduated from the Department of Architecture at EMU in 2001. For 17 years I have been
one of the directors at Skylap Construction and active in the architectural design and project
department. And this is my home...
I aim to integrate different styles which have not been tried before into the North Cypriot architecture and base all my designs on a story. My goal is to create masterpieces which will be talked about for years to come, not just concrete houses.
There are many differences and difficulties in designs architects create for themselves, and those created for customers.
I won Best Luxury Villa Platinum Award at the Propertync Awards for the Villa Meteorite I had designed for my own family. It started as a story of a meteorite falling on a house and was rewarded with this unique award.
There are many differences and difficulties in designs architects create for themselves, and those created for customers. This is because, architects always want their personal designs to be the best on the island. Therefore, my first objective was to design something different which looked out of ordinary. (This of course was a great challenge). As the concept, I was inspired by the story of a meteorite falling on a house and now I live in this house. I considered my wife as a client while designing this house, since we have similar taste, I know what she likes. We decided on the design criteria and materials. That would fit in with our family life. Because the land had a mountain and sea view we had to have lots of open areas and use lots of glass to be able to capture the surroundings inside. This was our most important criteria.
We Don't want Walls!
The basement would consist of a garage for two vehicles, a sports room, a movie theatre, a maids room and an engine room. We also had to add stairs from the basement to the main floor. It was best to put the garage below as it would prevent loss of space. We decided not to use internal walls on the main floor. We wanted each area, including the office to be intimate. We tried to make sure that no matter where each individual was, family members would be able to see and speak with each other.
On the top floor, we had to have a bedroom each for my two daughters (with dressing rooms and bathrooms), master bedroom and balconies. Each bedroom needed to be positioned with a sea view. The wing on the south side with the mountain view was also close to the neighbour building, therefore we decided on smaller windows. ¼ of the 1672 sqm land, in other words, 418 sqm was used for the house. The rest was used for open balconies and the basement is roughly 200 sqm.
As for the materials, I prefered, reinforced concrete commonly used in Cyprus, facade cladding and steel framework for decorative purposes. After the bricks and plaster, insulation was used to prevent heat loss. Special windows and doors were used as there were so many and heat loss needed to be minimised solar energy was used to produce electricity and heat pumps to utilize it. Underfloor heating, increase comfort inside the house. Cooling is provided with the same heat pump.
