Interior Design / Architecture
Are you ready to witness the re-birth of this well-known hairdresser salon. Hairdresser Selami Koçaker worked with interior designer Şölen Üstüner creating a new and improved, out of this world design. We have been given the opportunity to talk to Şölen Üstüner about her new design and would like to share our notes with you.
In general, what kind of changes did Mr. Koçaker want and what were you thinking when you started this project?
Mr. Koçaker wanted a chic yet practical salon. He had the idea of a prestigious salon, topping off his success in this profession. When I started the design I knew I had to stay away from the most used and most popular items. I like to steer away from cliché settings. The first thing that comes to mind when you say chic is crystal for instance I knew I couldn’t use them. Like my other projects, I placed all the functions in the right places then I created a style.
What can you say about how you used the space, created more space and the aesthetics of the building?
I created a diagonal layout in order to remove the corridor feeling of the narrow and long space. I focused on the functions required. This layout created a wider look making it easier to attend to clients. Folding screens around each function, made the space look larger and made it look as if each function was seperated from one another.
How do you choose the materials you use?
You have to be careful while choosing materials for busy places like this one. Surfaces and materials which will not be effected by chemicals have to be considered first. This of course narrows down the choice of colour and texture.
What about lighting and colour choices?
We have to choose bright lights such as white and daylight as they reflect the right colour of hair. Bright lights are not considered welcoming therefore I used durable floor tiles with a wooden look.
How did you come up with the children’s corner?
A children’s corner was necessary. A child size seat was going to be used. I didn’t want it to stand out so I used one side of the diagonal wall hiding the kitchen from sight.
The entrance to the salon. How should we look at it?
The outside is as important as the inside. It must be consistent with the concept and draw attention. Due to La Femme being situated on the ground floor of an apartment, the front facade had to stand out yet it had to complete the rest of the building. Therefore, the colour and materials are different but the diagonal shape and triangular features integrated into the building. These lines were designed to support the features of the interior design. I wanted to try something new with the entrance and I believe this is the main feature which complements the front facade.
Now lets ask Mr. Koçaker how he feels about the changes to his salon?
At the beginning, my team and I were very curious about how it would look and of course our clients as well. We didn’t think a place like this could change so much after so many modifications. We excitedly awaited for the project Miss Üstüner imagined to come to life. Even we couldn’t imagine the project would be completed like this. As a result, in one word-superb! We now have a very comfortable and modern place to work in. Everything is compatible with one another, the décor, colours, equipment. I would like to thank Şölen Üstüner again for her hard work and dedication.
