The classification of materials in architecture varies widely, in this article I will focus on classifying building materials according to carrier characteristics. Materials are mainly classified according to their usage areas; carrier, protective-insulating and coating properties are the most defining features for classification.
If we take a look at the designs from architecture of the past to the present, they have all been shaped according to either legislation, demand, function or materials. Buildings are areas or spaces designed within certain frameworks. The most important point affecting architectural design, the architectural elements, engineering criteria and application elements that ensure the implementation of the planned building are used together in harmony. The most difficult point is that the application material is selected correctly and in a way that provides the desired results. In general, the basic structure that provides the carrier of the existing architectural design, created by the desired function demand in buildings is essential for us, while the rest of the building is brought together piece by piece and ultimately a whole is formed. Combining this harmony like a conductor, the architect crowns the desired effect with the materials they choose.
Although the use of these materials is limited, with developing technology, they can become structures that form the whole of the building from the carrier; this transformation becomes an integral element both in terms of displaying the character of the building and in terms of the functionality and purpose of use. This design gives the pleasure to the designer of shaping with these limited usage materials.
Modern coatings, glass, concrete moulds that carry even routinized buildings to a completely different dimension have given us the chance to turn the impossible into reality.
Many materials have been developed in R&D laboratories to be materials of much higher quality and performance, especially with researches carried out from past to present, at certain intervals according to climate and regional factors. The new materials developed are called Nano-technology materials today and they provide architects with liberation in their designs, apart from more traditionally, frequently used, natural materials. Thanks to this freedom, it has become much easier to create buildings that have found their unique and true identity.
One of the best examples of these is the glass cladding facades; it is a very nice example with both a carrier building element and protective feature. In addition, the recently used Mesh aluminium facades offer us many different solutions with both functionality and texture diversity.
Another example is Perkisyin Concrete – panels created with glass fibre-coated concrete are created with coatings that allow them to carry a different style while creating a reinforced concrete effect outdoors. These coatings, together with being carriers, give us a very comfortable reinforced concrete texture. Moreover, this material displays a flexible, fluid and futuristic visual that can be transformed into much more biometric or different shapes thanks to many different moulds.
These materials take on a completely different identity apart from traditional materials such as wood, glass, metal, stone and aluminium. These building materials have now turned into carriers. Today, modern and industrial ideas have been supported by technical solutions in the field of architecture and have given new identities to materials.
Rather than a building element, it becomes the main shell that provides the carrier and visual aesthetics that sustain the entire building. It has offered us a softer applicability with continuous perceptions made on the vertical axis.
For us designers, diversity and usability are essential to achieving rational results. I believe that keeping track of developing technological materials and creating environments that will enable the use of new materials will expand the awareness of people.
I would like to review and share the details of another material for you in the following issues, in the hope of seeing structures formed with beautiful design solutions in the areas we live in.
