Mehmetçik Municipality was one of the five municipalities that received an award at the Propertync Awards 2019 ceremony. Municipality projects have entered the competition for the last two years and the number of projects presented by municipalities has tripled since the first season of the awards. This goes to show that they are taking a step in the right direction by having the projects assessed by highly qualified jury members that will have a great impact in the TRNC.
“Cittaslow Market Mehmetçik, was opened to the public on 11 November 2017. There are 120 parking spots in total of which 8 are designated for disabled parking. All electricity used is produced by solar energy. Our market is open on Tuesdays and Sundays and we provide services to our neighbouring villages. The market was founded to provide an area for local producers to sell their products and by doing so we also created places for local farmers to make sales and the Çayırova Lefkara House to sell our traditional Lefkara lace work.”
Cittaslow, is an international municipality association formed in 1999 in Italy. The Italian word ‘Città’ meaning city and the English word ‘Slow’ have been used together to create the word SLOW CITY. Today, this association can be found in 28 countries with 182 members.
Mehmetçik Municipality was awarded Reginal
Development Award for its Cittaslow Market
Mehmetçik project. It was chosen from
amongst 23 other municipality projects.
