The new city to be established on the shores of the Gulf of Aqaba in the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia, the giant project to be established in this city, and the goal of the project have been announced. The Line project, which is planned to be completed in 2030, will comprise the city of Neom, which is now a desert. Carbon emissions, energy efficiency, and harmony with nature are taken into consideration since the project’s construction has started.
The Line is a Saudi Arabian linear smart city that has been under construction since last month and is designed without cars, streets, or carbon emissions.
The 170-kilometer-long city was announced as part of the Vision 2030 project, which claims to create 380,000 jobs in Saudi Arabia and add $48 billion to the country's treasury. The Line will be the first project in the city of Neom, according to the presentation, and the city's infrastructure plans have been prepared with a population of 9 million people.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced The Line's plan on January 10, 2021, in a speech that was streamed on Saudi state television. The 170 kilometer-long Line project consists of two mirror-faced structures with an open area in between that are a combined 200 meters in width and 500 meters in height. All daily necessities are accessible within a 5-minute walk in a city that is divided into zones.
The city will have three levels: one on the surface for pedestrians and two below ground for infrastructure and transportation. All three levels will be powered by renewable energy. A high-speed train that will enable people to travel from one end of the city to the other in 20 minutes will be included once the transport layer is finished. Artificial intelligence (AI) will monitor the city and find ways to improve the quality of life for Line residents through forecasting and data models.
Construction costs are estimated to range from $100-200 billion to $1 trillion. The Saudi government claims that by 2030, it will offer 380,000 job opportunities, increase economic diversity, and contribute $48 billion to the state treasury. The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed in 2030 as of July 2022.
On July 25, 2022, Neom City's Chairman of the Board, Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, released a statement and a promotional video, which increased the project's exposure in the media.
