    Aesthetics Combines with Practicality

written by Interior Designer Nermin Gündoğdu

We started work on our coffee shop by finding the right name. We turned our name into a brand and then into a place. Ovis is creating its own identity with its smell, taste, image and design and aims to grow.

While creating the brand and its corporate identity we were inspired by something other than coffee. That is the moufflon from the goat-antelope subfamily. You can see the horns of the moufflon in our logo and environmental aspects from its natural habitat in the interior design.
The moufflon image used in the logo has a strong facial expression and is wearing a suit and tie. A true gentleman has come down from the mountains to the city. The grey rocks, brown tree trunks, and green pinecones take form as decorations and furniture. In short, The Moufflon has a befitting place to drink Espresso and eat tiramisu.

It is located at Hisarüstü. The walls of the inspire it and the indoor section is not closed of from the street. People sitting inside feel as if they are still sitting outside in the street. This is where the name of the first branch Ovis Hisarüstü came from.

The love we have for the streets brings us out into the square and our second branch Ovis Sarayönü is born. Our first aim was to lead the crowd in the square into the shop. The interior design was based on the environmental factors. Sarayönü Square and Dikilitaş inspire the idea of our espresso bar. Dikilitaş (Venetian Column) is the watchman of Sarayönü and the landmark of the street.

We love symbols. We wanted the column to be seen from the inside as well. While looking around we saw other pieces from the original structure of the building. Historical iron pull down shutters, an iron front door, iron ceiling windows and a winding staircase. Each piece was restored and included in the design of Ovis Coffees for everyone to see.

Coffee is not only enjoyed over a friendly get together, people prefer to have our unique coffee during meetings and while working therefore the working class groups were focused on during the preparation of the seating plans and menus. Ovis Dikilitaş now has a quiet private room reserved for meetings. We named it the ‘Silent Room’. It is upstairs and is for anyone who prefers silence although it is generally used for meetings.

Let’s give you a clue. This room is not only a meeting room. The historical shutters, old square and surrounding architectural historical buildings are best seen from this room. This is the room where we sat and listened to the silent footsteps of history during the process of designing the shop.

The beautiful exposed concrete starting from the Hisarüstü, continues with the Venetian Column and ends here with the powerful black used inside. The whirlpool design of the square has been copied inside with the swirling chandelier. The circular flow starts from the chandelier and ends at the ‘Espresso Bar’.

    Feel the city around you.
The sitting area was designed to combine the indoor tables with the outdoors ones. Furniture was designed for individual and group seating. The changeable modules are comfortable enough for short and long stays.

    Aesthetics combines with practicality.
Ovis Coffees has a simple interior design yet the 16 armed chandelier welcomes guests like a statue in the centre adding an industrial and aesthetic aura.

They were here whereas we were not.
Some buildings have certain elements, which have witnessed many changes over the years. They bare memories of a past era and prior owners. Most of these are worth preserving for they can be adapted into the new surroundings.
Therefore we kept the original spiral staircase, ceiling glass and windows, the door and original pull down shutters.

    Untouched grey surfaces: Exposed concrete.
Since the beginning of the rise of concrete with brutalism; The use of exposed concrete has been the start of a new era in architecture.

    Ideas becoming alive: Habitat.
The brand got its name from “The Moufflon”, which is a type of sheep and the concept of the interior design is based on its natural habitat.
