Loft apartment projects are increasing in North Cyprus everyday.

Loft apartments came about when old industrial buildings were converted into houses in America and have become an inspiration to many projects today.

Loft… When first heard, it evokes romantic, urban and bohemian concepts. In general, it is defined as spacious, and open living areas with the exception of the bathroom - without any inner walls. But nowadays Loft is more common for the definition of the apartment, roofing and main living area corresponds to high ceilings, mezzanine apartments. These apartments, which are used for different purposes after their first appearance, are a perfect option for those who like to look at today’s industrial appearance. Bare brick or large rough plaster walls, open pipework huge canvases cover the walls of loft apartments, lots of space has been created for decoration. Because of the high ceilings, the colors that are most suitable for the walls which are more spacious are black and copper.

During the years following the World War, many industrial buildings in the major industrial areas were converted into apartments. In other words, these buildings had been used for something else and then converted into houses. These types of houses are called Hard Lofts where as the loft apartments built entirely anew in the last 20 years reflecting the loft lifestyle are called Soft Lofts.

A loft can be an upper storey or attic in a building. They were first built in America in the 1970’s as a solution to housing problems and were preferred by artists because they were used as a house and a workshop. They became the symbol of a free life. Today’s lofts appeal to the middle and high class as they have high ceilings, large open spaces, unrefined surface materials, for example, brick work and cement ceilings, open plumbing, wide windows and suspended ceilings used to create a second storey area.

Loft apartments first emerged in America and were originally an upper room directly under the roof of industrial buildings. These divisions were used as workshops or storage rooms. Because of the economical situation and high property prices in New York during the 1940’s, artists taking advantage of cheap rent by working from home preferred these apartments. Nowadays, Loft apartments have become fashionable and new apartment projects are designed with loft apartments on the top floors. By doing this, the cheap apartments of the past have become the luxurious and expensive loft apartments of today. The Stark loft project in North Cyprus will be completed soon and 8 of the 16 apartments in this project are double storey loft apartments. The apartments on the top floor especially, have wide terraces and very high ceilings. They are very different from a typical apartment design.”
