Alsancak | Girne'nin Kıymetlisi
Over the past few years the Alsancak district has continued to grow and develop with many construction projects appearing. Alsancak Özgürlük Park, which was awarded Best Recreational Project at the Propertync Municipality Awards, has also added value to the area.
The town of Alsancak is a touristic town by the sea, some 10 km West of Kyrenia, located between Lapta and Karaoglanoglu. Before 1974 the town was called Karava, which means boat or ship in Greek. It was given this name because many boats would come to the harbour which used to be there. During the Cyprus Peace Operation, Turkish Peace Force soldiers landed from Turkey along this coast, using the harbour, on 20 July 1974 and because the Turkish Flag entered the island here first, the area was named ‘Alsancak’; meaning red flag. The population of this town is 6,000, but can reach some 10,000 during the summer months and there are many historical places and touristic facilities in this area.
The Yavuz Landing Monument showing where the Peace Operation took place in 1974 and Albay Karaoglanoglu Martyrs’ Cemetery and Museum are situated in Alsancak. Another historical place within the municipality border is the Lambousa Antique City. Although history books state that Lambousa was built as a colony of Laconia in the South of Greece around the end of 2000 BC, remains have been found dating back to 3000 BC. The Alsancak municipality has transformed the old Maramonte Beach Club into a municipal beach and has also opened Old Milos, which is an old mill, to the public as a resting and picnic area.
