When plastic is thrown away, it does not rot, rust, dissolve or biologically change. It stays in nature for a very long time. It pollutes water and soil, it harms the living things in water, even causes them to die. Whereas, we know that plastic can be reused. All we need are practical ideas and good people.
Conceptos Plasticos is a company that turns plastic and rubber waste into an alternative construction system for temporary housing. Functional buildings such as houses for the homeless, classrooms or rooms for gatherings are being built from these materials. These alternative buildings easily provide homes for hundreds of people and help the economy.
This company is providing modern and sustainable solutions by producing living areas for unprotected groups, improving their life standards and is creating alternatives with the social, economical and environmental effect of recycling. This objective challenges today’s squandering society.
The company’s founder Architect Oscar Andres Mendez and Conceptos Plastico’s team are from Colombia, Bogota where roughly 600 tonnes of plastic waste is produced daily. The team travel the city, collect waste plastic, electric and rubber and make building blocks out of them. These blocks are used in building houses quickly and easily.
The plastic waste is broken down, melted, poured into moulds and the bricks made are connected together like Lego bricks without the need for grout. The products include inflammable materials and the building becomes earthquake resistant because the main material is plastic. This product, gives workers the opportunity to quickly build cheap, high quality unique designs from recycled materials. 4 people can build a 40 m2 house in 5 days.
This objective challenges today’s squandering society.
A system easily changing plastic into building materials, motivating people to separate their waste, is being operated. People can even build their own houses because the blocks are very easy to use. Materials that help a society become stronger and help establish a physical infrastructure are being produced. Being able to build a house for the homeless or a school from waste products makes this project even more important.
Until now, Conceptos Plasticos has built 1500 m2 in total and aims to do more each year. During this time, the company has recycled more than 300 tonnes of plastic. The CEO of Conceptos Plasticos, Isabel Critina Gamez was chosen for the list of best 100 visionary leaders around the world’ in 2018. The company’s founder and strategic director architect Oscar Andres Mendez has won many awards for this project and he is a jury member for the Propertync Awards.
