Euro–Mediterranean Investment Company Ltd (EMIC) is a sustainable company geared to developing high value projects and making investments in the private sector. Since our formation we have worked in many sectors but due to our country’s strong tourism links, our first goal was to invest mainly in tourism’s infrastructure. To date we have two restoration projects completed, one is the old Iş Bank building which our company is presently using, and the other was the restoration of flats in the old Kyrenia Harbour area. The reasons for taking on these two projects were similar, to support our country’s development in the tourism sector with profitable investments, to add quality to the sector with secondary features, to provide job opportunities and to increase the level of service quality.
Whilst exploring our projects we crossed paths with North Cyprus’s leading chain store brand, Mardo, within Famagusta old town. The company’s product quality, product capacity, role in the local market and visions have had a positive impact on society, so we decided to work together on a restoration project in the Namik Kemal Square in the old town centre. This project reflects the experience our company has gained over the years and goes towards meeting the needs of the people in the area.
We worked with the accredited architectural company ‘All About Design’ during the restoration process. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them, they have worked very hard from beginning to end of this project and they are still working on improvements today.
We worked on the existing structure, abiding by the necessary conservation requirements and changes were made to the overall design to ensure authenticity to the project. The square in the old town centre is home to many historic civilisations, therefore all the work on the building’s exterior façade had to be approved by the Committee on Conservation of Cultural Assets at the Department of Antiques and Museums. This took months of hard work until the final design was agreed and accepted.
Our project, located in the Namik Kemal Square close to the Lala Mustafa Pasa Mosque, was completed in accordance with all the relevant colours and requirements of the Committee of Conservation. It is a simple and plain design which will not outshine the beauty of the famous Mosque, instead it reflects the beauty of the area’s skyline.
We wanted Mardo Kaleiçi to offer a wide variety of food that would appeal to both locals, as well as tourists visiting the Namık Kemal Square. Breakfasts feature on the menu together with traditional Cypriot cuisine. I believe we have created a very pleasant environment where you can enjoy your food, including the delicious ice creams and desserts. Since it opened, there have been a steady flow of customers, both young and old, families and friends, locals and tourists, who all make up the customer network. It makes us happy to know that we have given the people of Famagusta a fantastic city centre project. Lastly, with the help and support from our architectural company, ‘All About Design’, we have earmarked the second floor of the building for artistic activities.
