We visited the Turkish coffee shop established in the middle of Kıbrıs Town Houses, one of the most prestigious projects in North Cyprus located in Kyrenia’s Alsancak area.
It is the place to relive the Turkish Cypriot Culture in a peaceful green setting. It is known to be an area with a low level of rainfall therefore the landscape was designed with green areas and plants according to the climate. Only Kıbrıs Developments could come up with such a place to socialise. No wonder they recieved the BREEAM greenery award for this project. We sat with the project designer and marketing director of the company, Harper Özbirim at the Turkish Coffee Shop and talked over a cup of Turkish Coffee.
“We were inspired by old traditional coffee shops, their designs and important role in the North Cyprus Coffee culture. When you look at these coffee shops, you will see that people over a certain age go there to have coffee, but we wanted our coffee shop to attract a younger crowd. When the generation that does go to coffee shops gets older, they will stop going and another one of our traditional values will fade away. This is why we believed that we needed to include a traditional village coffee shops in our project.
We wanted a place where you could read your daily newspaper, drink your coffee and play backgammon just like the good old days. Of course we created a modern place to attract the younger generation of today. For example, normally you can’t find food at a coffee shop but you can here.
We are still preparing our menu, which will consist of a combination of homemade meals and fast food choices. There will be daily menus of homemade meals including desserts. We have a brick oven here so there will be food such as Kleftiko. Hamburgers will be served with attractive presentations, there will be breakfast menus and Sunday breakfast occasions. We are planning to make ‘Let’s meet at the coffee shop’ a weekly Sunday breakfast activity. Sunday breakfast with traditional food and lots of laughter. Our drink menu will be more than that found at a traditional village coffee shop. Besides, the usual tea and coffee, there will be different types of filter coffee and alcoholic spirits. After all you can find Zivania at village coffee shops, we are just going to add a few more choices."
Ingredients for the pastry
• 4 glasses of flour
• 1 tablespoon of dried yeast
• 3 tablespoons of sugar
• 25gr soft margarine
• 1 glass of warm milk
• 1 teaspoon of sugar
• 1 egg
Ingredients for stuffing
• 4-5 walnuts
• 15 hazelnuts
• sugar, tahini and sesame
Mix the yeast and sugar into the warm milk and wait for it to rise. Make soft dough from the flour, sugar, egg, margarine and yeast. Let it rest in a warm place for 25 min. Roll out thin sheets as large as a dinner plate. Spread as much of the tahini, nuts and sesame as you wish with a brush and roll. Then twist into the shape of a rose. Flatten the pastry with a rolling pin and place them on an oven tray. Brush some tahini on them and sprinkle sesame and sugar. Wait 35-40 min before cooking so the yeast can rise slightly more. Bake in oven at 200o C until golden brown.
This modern village coffee shop with backgammon, daily newspapers, a village square for cultural activities and events and the traditional drinking fountain built will help pass on our Cypriot Culture to future generations.
For now, the coffee shop is open only to the people living on the estate but there are plans to open it to the public on certain days between certain hours.
A few activities planed are Let’s meet at Gave Sunday Breakfast, Brick Oven Kleftiko Feast, Musakka and Meze-Aegean Cuisine and Cypriot Cuisine with Selim Yeşilpınar.
