Property News Interviews Interior Design / Architecture Food-Drink & Places
“We design unique living spaces that meet needs and carry aesthetic values”
Established in 2017 by the interior architects Merve and Mustafa Özahi couple, Özahi Design is a company that provides design and application services in various fields and projects such as residences, hotels, restaurants, shops, offices, clinics, schools, pharmacies, markets, garden landscape projects. In this issue of our magazine, we host one of these projects, the new generation tavern ‘Ülfet’, designed by Özahi Design.
Day by day, classical taverns began to be replaced by new generation taverns shaped according to the needs of modern society. In the past, people used to drink in a shabby tavern and then go to another place to have fun. This is no longer the case. New generation taverns allow people to both eat and have fun at the same place.
Ülfet, which is also the name of the tavern, is actually a female name that means meeting, socializing and chatting. The tavern was designed in accordance with the new generation tavern understanding, in harmony with the Cypriot culture and the silhouette of the Girne Old Turkish Quarter, where the building is located, without losing the modern but also the shabby atmosphere of the old taverns. During the design process, we determined the word meaning of Ülfet as a concept. We designed this place as a meeting place, a place where people can meet, eat, drink and chat, as well as have fun while listening to music.
While designing the interior, we took care to use elements that are both modest and attractive and reflect the Cypriot culture. We designed the entrance of the space to create an inviting and accessible feel. We made the existing arches in the building a design element by imitating them at the entrance. The landscape starting from the entrance continues throughout the place. We preferred plants that are cultural and grow mostly in the climate of Cyprus. An illuminated lion, specially designed from metal, was placed at the entrance. Traditional materials constitute the majority of our design elements. Mortared rubble stones, wood, handcrafted sestas (a creek plant with wheat straw and cifcik vine), woven wicker chairs, earthen terracotta flower pots.
We used rough white plaster throughout the place and took care to use the blue tone in a very balanced way. In addition to blue and white, wood black, hazeran and natural linen fabrics, bamboos, terracotta colors were used in furniture and accessories. In order to make the place warmer and more pleasant, plenty of accessories, mirrors and lighting were used in the design. We preferred Türksoy Wood for furniture works, Mavi Pandora for lighting, Tuse Home for decoration products and lighting, Greyartwork for wall drawings, Sezer Köroğlu Furniture for chairs and Halil Efendi Bahçesi for plants.
You can take photos in every corner of Ülfet. We created a pleasant photo area with the plants we added in front of the big mirror at the entrance. The niches in the middle and the accessories we chose inside also became a focus of attention.
“While designing a space, we consider even the smallest details as a whole and take care to reflect the general concept to all areas and to be original. In this project, in addition to the interior plan solution, we designed every detail from the plates on the tables to the terracotta-colored napkins as a whole.”
