    Consistent Tones During Changes

written by Interior Designer Nermin Gündoğdu

At Monochrome House, products made from raw materials combine with colour tones that are consistent during the changing seasons.

The first step to a design is to create colour and material scale. This scale then needs a name to reflect the house’s general mood. This project was named Monochrome House.

The prefix mono, meaning “one, single” in the word monochrome, defines as using tones of one colour in an effective way. While the colour palette for this colour is formed, grey tones are used for the background combinations and important pieces are added in black creating a defined contrast in the house.

The grey tones created on the monochrome scale play an important part in visually connecting rooms to one another. We first see the colour grey in the raw concrete used in the entrance. This texture was repeatedly used around the house and is considered as the design’s harmonising element.

The first signs of the general design can be seen in the entrance.

The entrance to a house welcomes hosts and guests and shows signs of what to expect in the rest of the house.

The entrance is a bold open space. It is naturally bright from the sunrays coming in through the glass doors opening into the other rooms. Therefore, the dark colours used on the walls seem lighter.

The entrance to Monochrome House is also a corridor joining the other rooms to one other. The entrance is a gallery space between the ground and first floor and is separated from the rooms on the ground floor with half open glass doors.

In the entrance the areas are connected through the wall texture, whereas the kitchen and living room are combined with the dining table. The dining table has not only a functional position but also an aesthetic role in the project. It accommodates dramatic details directing reflections and shadows caused by light due to its sculptural features and shiny surfaces.

The rooms on the ground floor are the kitchen, dining room and different sitting areas designed for daily use and also include separate living areas. Nowadays, open plans are mostly preferred for their practical use. In the Monochrome House project, the areas are open yet separated by glass partitions.

Dark colours were also used in the kitchen and dining room following the house’s general industrial style. In this area, black has been used in the main elements and accessories. The monochrome colour palette has been reflected in the material and different textures used in the room. Black stone in the kitchen worktop, metal structure in the chairs and stools and the table surface of black glass are all within the colour scale created.

Sculptural features with similar characteristics can also be seen in the dining room and bedrooms adding to the industrial style around the house. These details add an original and contrary touch to the house. The industrial style starts in the entrance with chains and continues with a woven fire in the living room then it continues in the upstairs bedroom prominently.

Besides the interior design details, the abstract human figurines used in the living room and ballerina images used in the bedroom adds a free and vigorous feeling to the Monochrome House project. These pieces complete the mood of the house.

The style of the Monochrome House is a material synthesis of ideas and inspirations used in other projects. This way, each project keeps its originality and upholds the personal image of the user.
