About the Major Cities in North Cyprus

We have prepared this article as an excellent guide for those who would like detailed information about the cities in North Cyprus. We have written about the cities, places to see and the most interesting places to visit. Wouldn’t you like to know more about these charming cities that stand behind the claim of being the top tourist city in the World?

KYRENIA, THE PEARL OF THE MEDITERRANEAN

The city is located on the North Coast of the island. Early settlers were surely attracted to the Kyrenia Harbor. The warm and clear waters of the Mediterranean, splash gently against kilometers of beautiful sandy beaches and magnificent views of the Besparmak mountains can be seen in the background.

The treasured history of this enchanting island can be seen in many examples around the city. Throughout history, many civilizations have been eager to surround themselves with its rich cultural texture and leave their own mark. There are cobblestones along the Kyrenia Harbor, pavements, and the spectacular castle. You can also find vestiges of Greek, French, Ottoman, and British architecture and reminders of their traditions and customs. The castle from the Byzantine period sits spectacularly opposite the harbor wall. In the past, this castle would protect the busy port but now it sits beautifully in the background of cafes, bars, and restaurants on the pier.

Kyrenia which has the highest population is the most famous city in North Cyprus. It is where tourists will find all the facilities, they need such as shops, restaurants, hotels, beaches, and numerous entertainment and social venues. Modern city life combines with history in this city.  The castle contains many historical works of art and visitors entering the castle or simply enjoying a meal at a restaurant on the pier looking at the castle from afar are amazed by its great structure.

Since the colonial period, many British people have acquired properties in Kyrenia and have either relocated here permanently or are using them as holiday homes. The high population of British has also encouraged those from other European countries.

Girne American University, which is one of the most important universities in North Cyprus, is located in Kyrenia therefore the city is home to many students. The city attracts the attention of property investors as well because there are short-term and long-term rental opportunities.

    FAMAGUSTA, THE CITY OF LEGENDS

The city of Famagusta has a naturally deep harbor which is located in the old walled city near Othello castle (also known as Othello’s Tower). Throughout history, this port has been home to many ships, merchants, and traders from the Mediterranean and beyond.

During those periods, the area had just begun to develop. Then, wealth was measured by the number of churches therefore many merchants built many places to worship. According to some historical resources, Famagusta was known as the City of Churches. Each church in this mysterious city has its own story to tell.

A walk along the three-kilometer Venetian walls completely surrounding the city, which had been conquered by the Ottoman Empire, is enough to reveal the history of the Old Walled City.
Salamis, which was one of the City of Kings during ancient times, is home to perfectly preserved Ancient Roman remains such as statues, historical columns, a theatre, and baths.
Othello Castle, which was an inspiration to famous English playwright William Shakespeare while writing his play Othello, city walls designed and drawn by Michelangelo, Venetian palaces where royalty lived, uncovered treasures, tombs discovered inland full of miraculous revelations, and much more is enough to make Famagusta a city full of legends. Famagusta is the best place to travel through time while learning about its rich history.

Besides its legendary history, Famagusta also has fabulous beaches, hotels by the sea, and casinos which makes it a perfect location to have a holiday. It is also home to Eastern Mediterranean University, one of the oldest and largest universities in North Cyprus. There are other universities in the city with international accreditation. Famagusta which has been known for its very different features over the years is now seen as a Student City.

With all of these features, Famagusta has become an ideal city for property investments therefore it is worth taking a look at the many housing projects.

    NICOSIA, THE DIVIDED CITY

This city offers a fascinating glimpse into history with its many unique features. The most well-known beauty of the city is the Venetian Wall which is about 4.5 km long. This Wall was built to surround and protect the city. It has 11 bastions and 3 city gates. The walls were constructed in the 16th century and have been well preserved to this day. They surround the Old City which has protected everything within like a time capsule.

Nicosia is both the capital city of North Cyprus and South Cyprus. People who come for touristic tours can experience the atmosphere of two different countries while walking around the common bazaar. If you stroll down the narrow and winding streets of the old city, you will see that not much has changed but you will also be fascinated by the calm and soothing atmosphere as well as the historical architectural treasures.

The Great Inn was built by the Ottomans in 1572 and today you can find little shops selling homemade and handmade products and a cafe in the center of the courtyard. In the city center, you can also find Selimiye Mosque which was converted from the gothic cathedral of Saint Sophia and the Great Turkish Bath built 400 years ago.

As the city is the center of government offices and bureaucracy there is always a large crowd of local visitors. City museums and internationally renowned universities in the city of Nicosia have abled this city to be also known as a Student City like Famagusta.
You should definitely take a look at the housing projects here because Nicosia has become a much-preferred city to make property investments and maintain rental returns.

    ISKELE, A HOLIDAY PARADISE

This small city is very close to Famagusta. Its old name is Trikoma and according to old legends, it is the place where Goddess Aphrodite brought the first fruit to North Cyprus. The museum and church Panayia Theotokos built in the 12th century and Ayios Iakovos (St. James) church erected in the shape of a small cross in the 15th century, are the two churches in the area with great historical value.

Bogaz, the fishing town right next door, brings remarkable pleasure when you look at the wonderful fish restaurants lined up at the port. When you travel further north, you will reach Bafra with its incomparable sandy beaches and clear blue seas. Bafra used to be an old village but now it has turned into an important touristic point due to the high-quality hotels built in the area. North Cyprus’s largest hotels and casinos are situated in this area. If you continue going north, you will reach the Karpasia area. You will be mesmerized by the untouched nature and golden beaches you will see. Many animal species are protected in their natural habitats and incredible flora is present.

Iskele’s popular area Long Beach is a 10 min drive from Famagusta and has become a holiday location for visitors from around the world with its modern structures and facilities. There are many housing projects by the spectacular beach and it is a perfect location for holidaymakers and property investors. İt seems that this area will continue to increase in popularity.

    GÜZELYURT, FAMOUS FOR ITS ORANGES

Every area of Guzelyurt is naturally famous due to being well known for the citrus fruits grown in the region. If you travel east from the capital city of Nicosia or from the city of Kyrenia and continue along the shore, you will travel for miles through the unspoiled countryside and see the citrus fruit trees even before you reach the city.

Guzelyurt may not be culturally or architecturally rich as other popular cities in North Cyprus but a short exploration of the city is enough to reveal hidden beauties with deep historical value. Also, Gaziveren which is the newly developing holiday location in the area has become an area of interest for property investors.  The campus of one of Turkey’s largest universities METU is also located here and the student population is rising.

    LEFKE, DERAY OF COLOUR

With its natural water resources, rich soil, and warm climate, similarly to Guzelyurt, Lefke is known as “North Cyprus’s Fruit Basket”. Besides lemon trees, a variety of fruits and nuts are grown in the area. If you have the chance to visit this city during the summer months, make sure you go to the Orange Festival organized every year in June and the Walnut Festival which takes place every July.

The shining star of the area is the European University of Lefke which has brought dynamism to the city and is the sole reason behind many investments made.
